Attabad Lake Guide: Hunza’s Accidental Wonder

The most photographed water in Pakistan is a scar that healed beautiful. In January 2010 a mountainside collapsed at Attabad village in Gojal, damming the Hunza River, killing twenty people and swallowing villages and roughly twenty kilometres of the Karakoram Highway as the water rose behind the rubble. For years the lake was a wound crossed by boats out of necessity. Today it is turquoise, ringed by cafes and resorts, and the necessity boats have become the attraction.

The quick answer

Attabad Lake sits on the KKH in Gojal, 30 to 40 minutes from Karimabad through the Attabad tunnels. Go mid morning for calm water, take the boat ride, eat by the shore, and roll it into a full Gojal day with Gulmit, the Hussaini bridge and Passu. April to October is the season; late October adds autumn colour to the blue.

The story under the surface

Knowing the history changes the visit. The village of Attabad stood where the landslide broke away; Ainabad and parts of Shishkat lie under the water; and for five years everything between Gojal and lower Hunza, people, goods, school runs, moved by boat across the new lake. In 2015 the realigned highway opened, five tunnels bored through the mountainside with Chinese partnership, and the lake settled into its second life as a destination. The blue, for the record, is real: glacial rock flour and depth do it, no filter required.

On the water

The jetties run ordinary passenger boats, the classic ride tracing the drowned highway's line, and jet skis for the louder version. Prices are per ride and negotiated; groups make the boats cheap, and the water is calmest before the afternoon wind. Life jackets are provided and non negotiable: the lake is deep, cold and not for swimming. Lakeside cafes and a growing strip of resorts handle lunch with a view that pays for itself.

The Gojal day

Attabad works best as the anchor of an Upper Hunza day rather than an isolated stop. Continue up the KKH to Gulmit's old village, dare the Hussaini suspension bridge, and finish under the Passu Cones, the serrated skyline that ends every Hunza slideshow. When to go

April to October covers boating and comfort. July and August are peak crowds; June and September are the smart middle. Late October is for photographers, when autumn burns around the blue. In deep winter parts of the surface can freeze and the jetties largely rest, though the tunnels keep the road itself open year round.
