Warsak and Tanda dams: the easy night close by
The nearest options are lakeside. Warsak Dam, about 20 to 30 km northwest on the Kabul river, is a popular local spot for boating and fishing with a rest house on site, and it makes a simple night by the water with permission. Tanda Dam, near Kohat to the south, is another quiet reservoir option. Neither is wild mountain camping, but both are close, calm and easy for a first night out.
The Galiyat: real forest camping, a drive away
For genuine forest camping, drive about 2.5 hours via Abbottabad into the Galiyat, the hill-station belt around Nathia Gali, Dunga Gali and Ayubia. The pine forests here are cool even in high summer, the Ayubia pipeline track gives you an easy forest walk, and several hosted camps provide tents and meals. This is the pick when you want mountain air rather than a lakeside night. Best April to October, and pack for cold nights.
Khanpur Dam and toward Swat
Two more options open up if you are willing to drive. Khanpur Dam is reachable on the motorway toward Islamabad and offers organised lakeside camping with water sports. And to the north, the road toward Swat and Kalam leads to riverside and forest camping in some of the prettiest valleys in the country, though that shifts from a night out to a proper trip.
