Karachi can feel endless, but escape the traffic and within a couple of hours you reach one of the great funerary cities of the world, Mughal mosques with astonishing tilework, lakes full of migratory birds, and open Arabian Sea beaches. Here are the best one-day trips from Karachi, all comfortably back by evening.
Thatta and Makli: the great day trip
Thatta sits under two hours east of Karachi and is the classic day out. Its crown is the Makli necropolis, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the largest funerary complexes on earth, with tombs and mausoleums spread across a hill over several centuries. A few minutes away stands the Shah Jahan Mosque, built in the seventeenth century under Mughal rule and famous for its blue-tiled domes and remarkable acoustics. Give it a full morning, and go in the cooler months.
The lakes: Keenjhar and Haleji
- Keenjhar Lake (about 122 km). One of Pakistan's largest freshwater lakes, built centuries ago to supply Thatta, now a scenic retreat and wildlife sanctuary with boat rides and lakeside spots. A popular family picnic, roughly 22 km beyond Thatta.
- Haleji Lake. A reservoir on the Thatta road that has become one of the finest birdwatching sites in South Asia, especially in winter when migratory birds arrive in huge numbers. Bring binoculars and go at dawn.
Older history: Chaukhandi and Banbhore
- Chaukhandi Tombs (about 40 km). A striking cluster of carved sandstone tombs just off the main road, easy to combine with a Thatta run.
- Banbhore (Bhanbore). The ruins of an ancient port city on the Thatta road, tied to the old Silk Route trade and the legend of Sassi and Punnu. One for history lovers.
Beaches, without leaving the city
If you just want sea air, Karachi's own coast delivers. Hawke's Bay, Sandspit and French Beach are within the city's western edge, good for a half-day of swimming, camel rides and seafood. French Beach is the quietest and cleanest of the three. For an easy family beach day you barely need to leave town.

Practical notes
- Go in the cool season. November to March is comfortable. Karachi summers are hot and humid, so if you must go, leave at first light.

- Carry water, sun cover and cash. Facilities at the sites are basic, and entry and parking are cash only.
- Respect the sites. Makli and Banbhore are fragile heritage, so keep to the paths and take your litter home.
