Lahore rewards anyone willing to leave the city for a day. Within a couple of hours you reach a Mughal deer tower, one of the great hill forts of the subcontinent, the pink salt tunnels of Khewra, and cities that are thousands of years old. Here are the best one-day trips from Lahore, grouped by how far you actually have to drive, with an honest note on which are a quick hop and which need a dawn start.
Under an hour to 1.5 hours: the easy wins
- Hiran Minar, Sheikhupura (about 40 to 50 km, under an hour). The most convenient trip from Lahore, and a lovely one. This early seventeenth-century Mughal complex was built by Emperor Jahangir in memory of his pet antelope, and its minaret and pavilion sit in the middle of a large water tank reached by a causeway. Peaceful, photogenic, and easy with family.
- Nankana Sahib (about 80 km). The birthplace of Guru Nanak and one of the holiest sites in Sikhism, centred on the Gurdwara Janam Asthan. A meaningful and welcoming half-day, especially of interest to history and faith travellers.
- Changa Manga (about 70 km). One of the world's largest hand-planted forests, with a park, a little train, boating and picnic grounds. A green, family-friendly day out.
The Wagah border: an evening you will not forget
Right on Lahore's edge, about 30 km east, the Wagah border hosts the famous flag-lowering ceremony each evening, a loud, theatrical piece of showmanship between the Pakistani and Indian sides. Go in the late afternoon, get there early for a seat, and pair it with a Lahore food evening on the way back. Technically inside the district, so barely a trip at all, but unmissable.
About two hours: the big day out
Rohtas Fort (about 180 km, two hours). A colossal sixteenth-century fortress built by Sher Shah Suri near Dina, and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its kilometres of walls, monumental gates and hilltop position make it one of the most impressive forts in the country, and it is a very doable day trip up the motorway. Leave by mid-morning at the latest.
A dawn start: the Salt Range
The Salt Range holds the region's showpieces, but they are a long day from Lahore, so start early. The Khewra Salt Mine (about 195 km, three to four hours each way) is the second largest salt mine in the world, with a little train into glowing pink tunnels. Nearby, the ancient Katas Raj temples sit around a sacred pond in the hills. Many people combine Khewra with Rohtas Fort, since both lie along the same route, but be realistic: this is a full day of driving, so an early start or an overnight makes it far more enjoyable.
For history lovers: Harappa
Harappa (about 2.5 to 3 hours southwest) is one of the great cities of the Indus Valley Civilisation, more than 4,000 years old, with a small museum on site. There is less standing to see than at Taxila, so it suits genuine history enthusiasts more than casual visitors, but standing on a Bronze Age street is a powerful thing.

- Go in the cool season. October to March is comfortable. Lahore summers are punishing, so start at dawn and favour shaded or indoor sites if you must go then.
- Use the motorway. The M2 makes Rohtas and the Salt Range far quicker than the old GT Road, but the last stretches to the sites are slower.
- Carry cash, water and sun cover. Entry and parking are cash only, and facilities at the sites are basic.
- Respect the heritage. Rohtas, Harappa, Katas Raj and Hiran Minar are protected sites, so keep to the paths and take your litter home.
