Every valley has its crown, and the Neelum keeps its highest one hidden. Ratti Gali Lake sits in a glacial amphitheatre at roughly 3,700 metres, fed by snowfields that never fully leave, ringed by meadows that spend July drowning in wildflowers. Reaching it takes a rough jeep, a stiff walk and the right two months of the year, which is precisely why it still takes breath away.
The quick answer
From Dowarian on the Neelum Valley road, local jeeps climb the track to the Ratti Gali base camp in about 1.5 to 2 hours. From the camp it is around an hour on foot, or a horse ride, to the lake. The season is July to September, full stop. Stay the night at base camp if you can; the lake at morning is a different lake.
The jeep track
Only the local jeeps run the Dowarian track, and after one bend you understand why. It is rough, narrow and spectacular, climbing through forest and then meadow with the valley dropping away below. Prices are per jeep and negotiated at Dowarian; filling the seats makes it cheap, and agreeing the return time before leaving saves standing arguments later. After rain the track can pause for a day, which is one more argument for the flexible itinerary.
Base camp and the final walk
The jeeps stop at the seasonal base camp, a summer village of tents, bedding and dal that exists from July to September and then vanishes. The final stage is a walk of about an hour up the valley to the lake, gaining height gently, with horses available for anyone who wants the view without the heartbeat. Then the bowl opens: water the colour of cut glass, snow to the waterline in early season, and the kind of silence that makes groups go quiet.
Staying the night
Day trips from Dowarian work, but the night at base camp is the connoisseur move. Sunset empties the trail, the stars at 3,500 metres do their show, and you walk to the lake at dawn before the day's jeeps arrive. Camps provide bedding, but the cold is real in every month: pack as if for a colder trip than you think you are on. Book through your host in peak weeks; the good camps fill.
When to go, honestly
July to September. That is the entire conversation. Early July can still have snow banks at the lake and the freshest water colour; August is the flower peak and the busiest; September is cold, clear and emptier. Outside those months the track is snowed shut and the bowl is winter's business. Check road and track status with your host in the valley before committing the drive; monsoon can close the Neelum road itself for hours at a time.
