They call Swat the Switzerland of the East, and in high summer, with its green hills, pine forests, and rushing rivers, you can see why. This is the softer, greener side of the northern trip, easy to reach and rich in forests and lakes rather than bare high peaks. With the new motorway, Swat is now one of the most accessible mountain getaways in the country. Here is how to do it.
Why go to Swat
Swat is for travelers who want green over grey: forests, rivers, and meadows rather than the stark high desert of the far north. It is gentler and greener than Gilgit-Baltistan, closer to Islamabad, and perfect for families and a first mountain trip. Kalam, up the valley, is the green heart of it, and Malam Jabba adds skiing in winter.
Where is Swat and Kalam?
The Swat Valley runs north through Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, following the Swat river from Mingora up through Bahrain to Kalam and the high Ushu and Mahodand areas. Malam Jabba, Pakistan's main ski resort, sits on a side ridge. Explore it on the Swat page.
What to see and do
- Mahodand Lake. A beautiful alpine lake above Kalam, reached by a rough jeep track through the Ushu forest. The classic Swat day trip.

- Malam Jabba. Ski and snowboard in winter, or ride the chairlift and zipline in summer.

When to go
April to October is the green season, and summer is when Kalam and Mahodand are at their best, though also busiest. Spring brings blossom and wildflowers. For snow and skiing at Malam Jabba, come December to February. Avoid the peak monsoon days, when the mountain roads can wash out.
How to get there
The Swat Motorway has changed everything. You can now drive from Islamabad to Mingora in around 5 to 6 hours, far quicker than before. From Mingora it is a scenic road up through Bahrain to Kalam, and a rougher jeep track beyond to Mahodand. A car reaches Kalam; you switch to a local jeep for the high lakes.
Where to stay and eat
Kalam and Bahrain have the most hotels and guesthouses, from simple riverside rooms to comfortable stays. Malam Jabba has resort-style accommodation. Eat the fresh river trout, grilled or fried, which is a Swat specialty, along with Pashtun karahi and chapli kebab. Book ahead in July and August, when Swat fills with domestic tourists.
The practical stuff
No permits needed. Mobile coverage is decent in the main towns and patchy higher up. Carry some cash. The jeep track to Mahodand is rough, so use a local jeep and driver and travel by day. Even in summer the high lakes are cool, so bring a layer.
