Tirich Mir is the highest peak in the world outside the Himalaya and Karakoram — and you can stand at its feet on a fully-supported 10-day trek from Chitral.
At 7,708 metres, Tirich Mir crowns the Hindu Kush — the highest mountain on earth outside the Himalaya and Karakoram ranges. The trek to its Babu Base Camp (4,700 m) is one of the great walks of northern Pakistan, and it starts in Chitral.
The route
From Chitral, a jeep drive into the Terich Valley reaches Shagroom, where the walking begins. Over several days the trail climbs through green pastures and glacier moraine to base camp, with the massif of Tirich Mir — and its neighbours Istor-o-Nal and Noshaq — filling the skyline.
Grade & season
It is graded moderate to strenuous and best attempted from mid-June to mid-September. No technical climbing is required, but the altitude and remoteness demand fitness and a well-run support team.
Do it with a local team
The expedition below is run by a native Chitrali outfit — licensed guides, expedition cook, porters, permits and full camp infrastructure included.
