Stand anywhere in the north on a clear day and you will wonder why the whole world is not here. Peaks like K2 and Rakaposhi. Valleys like Hunza and Kalash. Lakes, glaciers, forests, and a culture found nowhere else. By rights, the north should be one of the great tourism regions of the world, and every local family should share in that.
And yet tourism here still lags far behind its potential, and most local players earn only a little. Why? It is worth being honest about the real reasons, because some we cannot change quickly, but others are firmly in our own hands.
The reasons we cannot fix overnight
- Access. The roads are long and rough, and the flights to Gilgit, Skardu, and Chitral are few and often cancelled for weather. This limits how many travelers can come, and when.
- Seasonality. The high country is really only open a few months a year. Most of the income is squeezed into a short summer, and the rest of the year is quiet.
- Infrastructure. Power, signal, clean water, and services are patchy in many valleys, which makes hosting harder.
These are real, and they take time, government, and investment to improve. But they are not the whole story, and they are not the part that keeps money out of local hands.
