Neelum Valley in Azad Kashmir is one of the greenest and most affordable mountain trips within reach of Islamabad, all rushing rivers, pine slopes and small villages. Costs are modest, but the jeeps and the chairlift for the big sights add up. Here is an honest breakdown of what a Neelum Valley trip actually costs in 2026. For the full picture, see our Neelum Valley guide.
Daily budgets by style
- Backpacker: under PKR 4,000 a day. Shared transport, simple riverside guesthouses, and local food.
- Comfortable: PKR 7,000 to 12,000 a day per person. A private car for the valley, a decent riverside hotel and eating well.
- Comfort and above: PKR 12,000+ a day. The nicer hotels in Keran and Sharda and a private car throughout.
Where the money goes
- Transport. Drive or ride from Islamabad to Muzaffarabad (about three to four hours), then up the valley. A private car for a few days is the main cost; shared vans are far cheaper.
- The Ratti Gali jeep. Reaching Ratti Gali Lake means a jeep from Dowarian and then a short trek, a set local rate per vehicle, so cheaper split among a group.
- Arang Kel. The trip up to Arang Kel combines a short chairlift and a hike, each with a small fee. See our Arang Kel guide and Ratti Gali guide.
- Stays and food. Riverside guesthouses in Keran, Sharda and Kel are inexpensive, and food is cheap.
What a trip roughly costs
A 3 to 4 day Neelum trip for two from Islamabad often comes in around PKR 40,000 to 65,000 all in, depending mostly on transport and hotels. As with the rest of the north, transport and shared jeeps are the biggest variables, so a group brings the per-person cost down.
Before you go
One important note: foreigners may need a permit or NOC for parts of the Neelum Valley near the Line of Control, so check the current rules before you travel. Pakistani nationals generally do not need one, but carry your CNIC for the checkposts.
