A honeymoon does not have to mean a passport and a long-haul flight. Northern Pakistan has some of the most romantic scenery anywhere: turquoise lakes, snow peaks over apricot orchards, riverside cottages and old forts turned into heritage hotels. Here are the most romantic places for a honeymoon in the north, with an honest word on when to go and how long to give it.
Hunza: the classic honeymoon
Hunza is the first choice for good reason. Base in Karimabad among the orchards, watch sunrise light the peaks from Eagle's Nest at Duikar, wander the 700-year-old Baltit and Altit forts, and take a boat out on the turquoise of Attabad Lake. It is beautiful, compact and gentle, with lovely stays from cosy guesthouses to lakeside resorts. Time it with the spring blossom or the golden autumn for the most romantic light. See our Hunza guide.
Neelum Valley: green and intimate
For something closer and softer, Neelum Valley in Azad Kashmir is all rushing rivers, pine slopes and small riverside villages. Stay in a riverside cottage at Keran or Sharda, take the chairlift and hike up to Arang Kel, and enjoy how green and intimate it feels. It is an easier drive than the far north and a favourite for a shorter, quieter honeymoon.
Swat and Kalam: green and accessible
Swat and Kalam are the most accessible mountain honeymoon, quick from Islamabad on the motorway. Green valleys, the Ushu forest, Mahodand Lake and Malam Jabba give you plenty to share, and in winter Malam Jabba adds snow and a chairlift for a cosy cold-weather trip. A good pick when you want scenery without a long journey.
Naran and Kaghan: alpine summer
In summer, Naran and Kaghan deliver classic alpine romance: jeep up to Lake Saif ul Malook at dawn before the crowds, picnic by the river, and day-trip to Lulusar and Babusar. It is a summer-only valley, snow-free and green from roughly May to September, and a long-time honeymoon favourite.
Skardu: heritage forts and grandeur
For something grander, Skardu offers the restored heritage forts of Shigar and Khaplu, now boutique hotels, plus the Kachura lakes and Shangrila, sometimes called Heaven on Earth. It is the most dramatic setting and, thanks to the flight from Islamabad, easier to reach than you might expect. Ideal for couples who want mountains and a touch of history.
Planning notes
- Best season. April to October. Spring blossom and golden autumn are the most romantic; summer is greenest and best for the high valleys.
- How long. Five to seven days for one region, ten if you want to combine two or add Skardu.
- Make it easy. A hosted honeymoon trip handles the transport, forts and stays so you can simply enjoy it. Booking directly with local hosts also keeps it personal.
- Privacy. Ask for rooms with a view and quieter guesthouses or heritage stays rather than the busiest hotels.
