- October to March for the Salt Range and plains; summer for the northern valleys
Let us be honest: Lahore is a long way from the mountains. Islamabad is the real gateway to the north, so for Lahoris a weekend away is either a shorter trip to the Salt Range and Soon Valley, or a longer push up to Murree and the northern valleys. Both are worth it. Here is the honest guide to weekend getaways from Lahore, sorted by how far you actually have to drive. For same-day ideas, see our one-day trips from Lahore guide.
Closest: the Salt Range
The nearest real change of scenery is the Salt Range, about 2.5 to 3 hours up the motorway. Base at Kallar Kahar, a small valley with a lake and resident peacocks, and fill the weekend with the Khewra Salt Mine and the ancient Katas Raj temples nearby. It is a completely different landscape from the Lahore plains, and it makes a comfortable one or two-night trip. Best October to March, when the plains are cool.
Quiet and green: the Soon Valley
A little further, about four hours in the Khushab district, the Soon Valley is the reward for a slightly longer drive. Ringed by the Salt Range mountains, it holds the Uchali and Khabeki lakes, gardens and birdlife, and it stays quiet and green well into the year. This is the pick when you want calm rather than crowds.
Hills and snow: Murree and the Galiyat
For proper hill air, Murree and the Galiyat are about 4.5 to 5 hours from Lahore via the motorway, through Islamabad. Murree, Nathia Gali and Ayubia give you pine forests, cool weather and, from roughly December to February, the closest reliable snow to Lahore. A classic two-night weekend for Lahori families.
The long push: the northern valleys
The deep north is a genuine commitment from Lahore. Naran and Kaghan, Swat and Kalam, and Neelum Valley are all roughly eight hours or more away, so they need a long weekend, and they are summer trips since the high valleys close in winter. Many Lahoris shorten the journey by driving to Islamabad first, or by flying into Islamabad and continuing from there. If you are making the effort, give it three days rather than two.
Quick glance, by drive time
