Best Time to Visit Kumrat Valley: Weather, Season by Season

Kumrat is a valley where timing decides the whole trip. Come in the right window and you get deodar forest over a glacial river, meadow plateaus above the treeline and lakes worth every step. Come in the wrong one and you meet a closed track and a cold apology. Here is the honest season by season picture, so you can pick your window on purpose.

The quick answer

The valley is open roughly May to October. July and August are the green peak and the most reliable months for Jahaz Banda and Katora Lake. June and September are the smart months: the same forest, colder nights, thinner crowds and easier camps. November to April, Kumrat is shut under snow. Nights are cold in every month of the year.

May and June: the valley wakes up

Snowmelt fills the Panjkora, the forest floor greens, and the camps reopen through May. Days are mild, nights properly cold, and the high trails to Jahaz Banda are still shaking off snow, so treat the lakes as a maybe rather than a plan. June firms everything up: by mid month the valley is fully itself, the track from Thal runs daily, and you get Kumrat before the school holiday wave arrives. For the valley floor alone, June might be the single best month.

July and August: the green peak

This is Kumrat at full volume, in both senses. The forest is at its deepest green, every camp is running, and the routes to Jahaz Banda and on to Katora Lake are as reliable as they get. It is also when everyone comes, when camp prices peak, and when the monsoon reaches in. Kumrat catches moderate rain rather than a soaking, but a wet day turns the jeep tracks greasy and can cost you your lake day, so build one flexible day into any July or August plan. Days run 15 to 25 degrees in the valley; nights still ask for a real blanket.

September and October: the golden window

September might be the connoisseur’s month: the rain gone, the light long, the crowds back at work, and the lakes still reachable in the first half. By October the broadleaf colour turns, nights push toward freezing, and the camps begin packing up from the top of the valley down. An early October trip gets autumn Kumrat almost alone, but check with your host that the camps and tracks you need are still running before you commit the drive.

November to April: closed

Snow shuts the valley, the track from Thal, and everything above it. The camps come down and the valley returns to the people who live there. There is no winter tourism version of Kumrat; point the winter urge at Malam Jabba or Murree instead and come back in June.

Reading the weather like a local

Three rules serve better than any forecast. First, the valley is always colder than Thal, and the meadows are always colder than the valley, so dress for the highest point of your day. Second, rain that is a drizzle at the camps is mud on the tracks, so the day after rain is a valley day, not a lake day. Third, cold decides comfort more than rain here: the trips that go wrong in Kumrat are almost always underdressed, not unlucky. Bedding beats forecasts every time.
