What a Skardu Trip Actually Costs: Honest 2026 Budgets

Skardu budgets confuse people because the destination runs on per-vehicle economics: the jeep to Deosai costs the same whether it carries one dreamer or four friends, and so does the car from Islamabad. Understand that one fact and every Skardu budget becomes predictable. Here are three honest ones.

The quick answer

From Islamabad in 2026, per person for five days: budget road trip PKR 45,000 to 65,000; mid-range with a flight or shared car and good hotels PKR 100,000 to 170,000; comfort-first beyond PKR 200,000. Getting there: the fork in the budget

The road costs two days each way plus fuel and an overnight stop, which for a solo traveller in a hired car is real money, and for four friends splitting it is a bargain. The flight runs roughly PKR 20,000 to 35,000 one way and cancels on weather, so budget flexibility along with the fare. Sleeping and eating

Guesthouse doubles run PKR 4,000 to 12,000, solid mid-range hotels PKR 15,000 to 40,000 in peak weeks, and Baltistan's famous heritage properties price like the experiences they are. Food is kind to budgets: PKR 1,500 to 3,000 per person per day covers proper meals, and the Balti dishes worth ordering are rarely the expensive ones. June and September rates undercut July and August by enough to fund an extra jeep day.

The jeep days: where Skardu budgets are won

Skardu's greatest hits are day trips with a per-vehicle price tag: Deosai (roughly PKR 12,000 to 20,000 per jeep), the Kachura lakes and Sarfaranga (less, and partly doable by ordinary car), Shigar and Khaplu (ordinary car territory). Solo travellers should join group departures, and groups of four should congratulate themselves. Sample five day budget, mid-range, per person in a group of four

Flight in and shared car out, or shared car both ways: PKR 30,000 to 45,000. Four nights at PKR 6,000 to 12,000 per person sharing. Food PKR 10,000 to 15,000. Deosai jeep, lakes day and forts divided by four: PKR 12,000 to 18,000. Total: roughly PKR 100,000 to 140,000 per person for the full Baltistan experience, less with guesthouse nights, more in the peak weeks.

When the same trip costs less

June and September, always: same open valleys, lower rates, thinner crowds. Deosai opens around late June, so late June and early July hit the sweet spot of access and value. October drops prices further but starts closing Deosai and the high country, and winter Skardu is its own quiet, cheap, cold adventure for the prepared.
