There are two ways into Baltistan and neither is ordinary. One is a single hour in the air on what pilots and passengers alike call one of the great scenic routes of world aviation. The other is 600 kilometres and two days on the Karakoram Highway and the Indus gorge road, which is less a journey than an experience with a destination attached. Here is the honest comparison, so you can choose with open eyes.
The quick answer
Fly if your leave is short and your plans can survive a cancellation: one hour, daily in season, roughly PKR 20,000 to 35,000 one way in 2026, weather dependent. The flight
On a clear day the Islamabad to Skardu sector is absurd: the Margallas fall away, the ridges stack higher and higher, and then the big wall arrives, with Nanga Parbat standing off the wing before the descent over the Indus and the cold desert into Skardu's bowl. Window seats are the entire point; the mountain side fills first, so check in early and ask the crew which side is doing the show that day.
The catch is the weather. The approach needs clear conditions, so cloud cancels flights at short notice, sometimes for days in a row in unsettled spells. The rules that keep the flight a blessing rather than a trap: book early for summer, keep a buffer day on each end, hold refundable fares where offered, and always know what you would do on the road if the flight fails you.
The road
The drive is two days of the subcontinent's greatest road engineering: the Hazara Motorway, the Indus at Thakot, the KKH under Nanga Parbat's shadow, then the rebuilt Jaglot to Skardu road threading the gorge to Baltistan. It is long, it is tiring, and travellers who love roads rate it among the best days of their lives. Ordinary cars manage it in season; two drivers or a patient two day plan manage it well. Fly one way, drive the other
The connoisseur plan, and the one we would book ourselves: fly in while you are fresh and your holiday clock is running, spend the saved day on Deosai or the Kachura lakes, then drive out with the KKH as the finale, no flight anxiety attached. It needs a one way car arrangement, which local hosts organise routinely, and it turns the transport question into two highlights instead of one gamble.
Whichever way you go
May to October is the season for both wings and wheels. Book Skardu rooms before you travel in July and August, carry cash past Besham, and give Baltistan the days it deserves once you are there: the town is the doorway, not the destination.
