Hunza is compact enough to see a lot without long drives, which makes it perfect for a structured trip. The only real question is how many days to give it. Here is a flexible day-by-day Hunza itinerary you can run as three, five or seven days, with honest notes on getting there, when to go and what it costs. For the full background, read our Hunza Valley guide first.
Before you go: getting there and when
Fly Islamabad to Gilgit (about an hour, weather permitting) then drive two to three hours to Karimabad, or take the Karakoram Highway overland in 18 to 20 hours, usually split over two days. See our how to get to Hunza guide. The season runs May to October, with blossom in April and golden autumn in September and October.
Day 1: Karimabad, the forts and Eagle's Nest
Base yourself in Karimabad. Spend the morning at the 700-year-old Baltit Fort and the older Altit Fort below it, wander the bazaar for dried apricots and Hunza crafts, then drive up to Duikar for sunset at Eagle's Nest, with Rakaposhi and Ladyfinger glowing across the valley. Stay the night up at Duikar for the sunrise, or back in Karimabad.
Day 2: Upper Hunza and Attabad Lake
Head into Gojal (Upper Hunza). Take a boat on the turquoise Attabad Lake, drive on to the iconic Passu Cones, and if you have the nerve, cross the wobbly Hussaini suspension bridge. Borith Lake and the Passu glacier viewpoints round out a spectacular day. See our Attabad Lake guide.
Day 3: Khunjerab Pass or Hopper Glacier
Two great choices. Drive up to Khunjerab Pass at 4,733 m on the China border, one of the highest paved crossings in the world, a long but unforgettable day. Or cross to Nagar for the Hopper Glacier and its ice-fall. Either makes a strong finish to a three-day trip.
Days 4 to 5: Rakaposhi and a slower pace
With five days, add the Rakaposhi viewpoint and the base-camp day hike from Minapin, a slow morning back at Duikar, and time simply to enjoy the orchards and the food. Hunza rewards not rushing.
Days 6 to 7: a side trip
For a full week, add a side trip to the Naltar Valley and its coloured lakes (reached via Gilgit), or spend the extra days going deeper into Gojal toward Chapursan. This is also the version that suits blossom or autumn photographers who want to chase the light.
Costs and tips
- Budget. See our cost of a Hunza trip guide for daily figures and a sample package price.
- Acclimatise before the Khunjerab day, drink water and go slowly at altitude.
- Carry cash. ATMs thin out after Gilgit, so bring enough for the whole trip.
- SIM. Telenor has the widest coverage, with SCOM for the remote upper valleys.
- Book early for blossom week and peak summer, when Karimabad fills up.
