Every Kaghan trip faces the same fork at Kiwai: push on to Naran with the crowds, or turn up the steep little road that climbs to Shogran. The plateau at the top, 2,360 metres up in pine forest, is the valley's gentlest reward, and the jeep track above it leads to something better still: the Siri Paye meadows, a rolling green tableland near 2,900 metres that spends its summers half in cloud and entirely in flower.
The quick answer
Drive the Naran road to Kiwai, about 5 hours from Islamabad, then climb the short paved road to Shogran. Stay the night at a plateau hotel, and take a local 4x4 up the 6 to 7 km track to Siri Paye the next morning. May to September is prime. It is the best one night mountain trip in the lower valley, and the classic first stop of a longer Kaghan run.
Shogran: the plateau
Shogran is a place to slow down rather than a checklist: hotels and huts scattered through forest clearings, walking paths under the pines, and the wall of the Kaghan Valley across the gap, with Makra Peak and, on clear days, Malika Parbat on the skyline. Evenings are cool in August and cold in every other month. The plateau's hotel row spans budget to comfortable; book ahead for summer weekends because capacity is modest and demand is not.
The jeep to Siri Paye
The track from Shogran to Siri Paye is short, rough and worth every jolt. Jeeps wait at the plateau stands; the price is per vehicle and negotiated, so filling the seats is the economy move. Part way up sits Siri, a small lake that mirrors Makra Peak when the wind sleeps. Then the trees stop and the Paye meadows begin: turf, wildflowers, grazing horses, and cloud drifting through at eye level. Horse rides work the meadows in season, and the walking is as easy or as long as you want it.
Walking instead of riding
Fit walkers can skip the jeep entirely: the track makes an honest half day climb from Shogran, and coming down on foot with the valley spread below is arguably better than the drive. Carry water and rain cover; the weather up here changes its mind hourly, and the fog that annoys photographers is half the atmosphere anyway.
When to go
May to September is the green season and the safe bet for the track. April and October are quieter and colder, with the meadows browning at the edges. In winter the Siri Paye track closes under snow while Shogran itself usually stays reachable, becoming a quiet snow retreat for the well prepared. Monsoon weeks in late July and August bring the lushest green and the muddiest track in the same package.

Yes, carefully: the Kiwai to Shogran road is paved but steep. The onward track to Siri Paye is 4x4 only, with jeeps for hire at Shogran.
Is Shogran better than Naran?+
They do different jobs. Shogran is closer, calmer and greener, ideal for a one night meadow trip. Naran is the base for Saif-ul-Malook, Babusar and the high valley. Many trips do Shogran on the way up.
