Swat is the easiest big mountain valley to reach from Islamabad, and the new motorway has made it quicker than ever. In three to five days you can ski or ride the chairlift at Malam Jabba, follow the river up to Kalam, walk a pine forest and jeep to an alpine lake. Here is a day-by-day Swat and Kalam itinerary. For the full background, read our Swat and Kalam guide.
Before you go: getting there and when
Drive from Islamabad to Mingora in about five to six hours on the Swat Motorway, then continue up the valley. The season is April to October for green valleys, or December to February for snow at Malam Jabba. The upper Kalam roads are seasonal, so summer is best for Mahodand.
Day 1: Islamabad to Malam Jabba
Drive up in the morning and spend the afternoon at Malam Jabba, Pakistan's best-known ski resort, with a chairlift, zipline and, in winter, skiing. History lovers can add Swat's Buddhist heritage near Mingora, such as the Butkara Stupa. Overnight in Malam Jabba or down in the valley.
Day 2: up the valley to Kalam
Follow the Swat River north through Bahrain to Kalam, stopping for riverside trout and mountain views. Around Kalam, walk the Ushu pine forest and enjoy the cooler air. Stay in Kalam, the base for the upper valley.
Day 3: Mahodand Lake
Take a jeep from Kalam to Mahodand Lake, about two hours up a rough track through the Ushu valley. The alpine lake is ringed by peaks, with boating, trout and meadows. Best from roughly June to September. Return to Kalam or start back down. This rounds out a solid three-day trip.
Days 4 to 5: the upper valleys and a slow finish
With more time, explore the quieter Utror and Gabral valleys above Kalam, or simply slow down with more riverside time before driving back via Mingora. These upper roads are jeep country and firmly summer only.
Tips
- Season. The upper Kalam and Mahodand roads are seasonal, so plan Mahodand for summer. Malam Jabba is a winter option too.
- Transport. The valley road is fine in a normal car to Kalam, but Mahodand and the upper valleys need a jeep, hired in Kalam bazaar.
- Leave early on Mahodand day, since the jeep track is slow both ways.
