Islamabad is the best-placed city in Pakistan for a weekend away. The Margalla Hills are only the start: within a few hours you reach pine-forest hill stations, alpine lakes and green valleys, and a proper Friday-to-Sunday gives you time to actually arrive and relax rather than just drive. Here are the best weekend getaways from the twin cities, sorted by how many nights they really need and when to go. For same-day plans, see our one-day trips from Islamabad guide instead.
One night: close and easy
- Nathia Gali and the Galiyat (about 2.5 hours). The classic Islamabad weekend. Cool pine forest, the easy Ayubia pipeline walk, and the hill-station charm of Nathia Gali, Dunga Gali and Ayubia. Green in summer, snowy in winter, lovely almost any time.
- Murree and Patriata (about 1.5 hours). The oldest hill-station escape, busy but fun, with the chairlift and cable car at Patriata. Best midweek or in shoulder season to dodge the crowds.
- Khanpur Dam (about 1 hour). A lakeside overnight with water sports and bonfire camps, perfect when you want an easy night out with the family.
Two nights in summer: the real mountains
- Naran and Kaghan (about 6 to 8 hours). The summer favourite. Base in Naran and jeep up to Lake Saif ul Malook, with Lulusar Lake and Babusar Pass as day trips. A snow-free green valley from roughly May to September, and firmly a two-night trip. See our Naran and Kaghan guide.
- Swat and Kalam (about 5 to 6 hours). The Swat Motorway has made this much quicker. Green valleys, Mahodand Lake, the Ushu forest and Malam Jabba, with plenty for a relaxed weekend. Read the Swat and Kalam guide.
- Neelum Valley (Azad Kashmir). Drive to Muzaffarabad in three to four hours, then up the Neelum Valley to Keran and Sharda, with Arang Kel as the highlight. Green and riverside, best April to October.
- Kumrat Valley (Upper Dir). Cedar forests, waterfalls and the Katora Lake trek, reached through Thal. Rougher and quieter, a summer trip for those who want fewer crowds.
Fly for the weekend: Skardu
If you have the budget, the Islamabad to Skardu flight (about 45 minutes, weather permitting) turns Baltistan into a long-weekend possibility: the Kachura lakes, Shangrila, the cold desert and, in season, Deosai. It is weather-dependent, so keep a buffer, but it is the fastest way to reach the high mountains for a short trip. See our flight or road to Skardu guide.
Winter weekends: snow within reach
From roughly December to February, the snow brings its own weekends. Murree and the Galiyat are the closest snow, and Malam Jabba in Swat adds a chairlift and a ski slope. Remember that the high valleys, Naran, Babusar and the deep north, close with the snow, so winter is for the accessible hill stations rather than the alpine lakes.

Questions people ask
What is the best weekend getaway from Islamabad?+
For one night, the Galiyat around Nathia Gali (about 2.5 hours) is the classic. For two nights in summer, Naran and Kaghan or Swat and Kalam are the favourites, with real mountain scenery.
Where can you go for one night from Islamabad?+
Nathia Gali and the Galiyat, Murree and Patriata, or Khanpur Dam are all close enough for a single overnight. The Galiyat pine forests are the pick.
What is a good winter weekend from Islamabad?+
Murree and the Galiyat for snow, roughly December to February. The high valleys like Naran close with the snow, so save those for summer.
