Pakistan's classic hill station an hour from Islamabad — Mall Road, the Patriata chairlift, and the pine ridges of Nathia Gali and the Galiyat.
Murree is Pakistan's original hill station — an hour and a half from Islamabad, which is both its greatest asset and its famous flaw. Come midweek or off-peak and you get what the British built it for: pine ridges at 2,300 m, cool air over the Mall, and long walks with Kashmir's mountains on the horizon.
The smarter version of a Murree trip usually tilts toward the Galiyat: Nathia Gali's quieter ridge, the Ayubia pipeline walk, and the Mushkpuri and Miranjani summits — honest half-day hikes with the best views in the district. Patriata's chairlift-and-cable-car combination remains the family staple.
In December and January this is the nearest reliable snow to the Punjab plains, and the town fills accordingly; a local host who knows the parking, the timings and the back roads turns a jam into a holiday.
From Islamabad the Murree Expressway makes it 60–70 km and around 1.5 to 2 hours to Mall Road; Nathia Gali is another 30-odd km along the Galiyat ridge road. From Lahore it is a comfortable single day via the M-2.
In snow season carry chains or hire a local 4x4 for the last climb — the administration closes segments when the road ices, and weekend queues start early.
The classic promenade with Pindi Point and Kashmir Point at either end — go early morning for the light and the space, then leave the afternoon to the crowds.
Chairlift plus cable car over pine valleys — the district's most popular family outing. Weekday mornings cut the queue to nothing.
A 2,800 m summit above Nathia Gali, two to three hours up a clear trail through forest and meadow. The best effort-to-view ratio in the Galiyat.
The famous flat 4 km forest track between Dunga Gali and Ayubia — monkeys, ancient pines, and pram-level easy. Pair it with the Ayubia chairlift.
The Galiyat's prettiest base: colonial church, quiet lanes, and trailheads for Mushkpuri and Miranjani. Stay here rather than Mall Road if walking matters more than shopping.
December–February brings dependable snowfall. Midweek snow days are magic; weekends need patience, chains and an early start.
| Guesthouse room (double, per night) | PKR 4,000 – 12,000 |
| Hotel on/near Mall Road (peak) | PKR 12,000 – 35,000 |
| Patriata chairlift + cable car | PKR 1,500 – 3,000 |
| Local 4x4 in snow (short transfers) | PKR 4,000 – 8,000 |
| Guided Galiyat hike (half day) | PKR 2,500 – 5,000 |
Typical 2026 ranges. Everything doubles on snow weekends and long holidays; midweek and shoulder-season prices are the real Murree bargain.
Mall Road keeps you in the middle of the bustle; Bhurban trades it for resort calm. For the Galiyat version, base in Nathia Gali or Dunga Gali — cooler, greener, and beside the trailheads rather than the traffic.
