- June and September for value; July and August are peak-priced
Naran is where most Pakistanis learn what a mountain trip costs, and where the same trip can cost double depending on nothing but the calendar. Here are the honest numbers behind the classic 3 day run, and the two decisions, dates and group size, that move them more than any bargaining ever will.
The quick answer
From Islamabad, per person, for 3 days: budget PKR 18,000 to 28,000 riding vans and guesthouses; mid-range PKR 30,000 to 50,000 with a shared car and decent hotels; comfort-first beyond PKR 60,000. July and August weekends sit at the top of every range; June and September sit comfortably below the bottom. The valley itself is covered in our Kaghan guide and the drive in the route guide.
Getting there
Your own car costs fuel for roughly 520 km round trip plus the patience for the N-15's slow miles. A hired car with driver for the full 3 days lands in the mid tens of thousands and divides beautifully by four. In-season vans and buses connect Rawalpindi and Mansehra to Naran at student-budget prices, at the cost of schedule freedom. Whatever carries you, fuel and cash up in Balakot: the valley runs on cash.
Sleeping: where the calendar bites
Naran's hotel strip prices like an airline: PKR 12,000 to 35,000 for the same room across the season, guesthouses from PKR 4,000, and long-weekend spikes beyond all of it. Two rules save real money: book before you drive (arriving roomless at 8 pm in July is the classic expensive mistake), and consider sleeping at Kaghan or Khanian downstream where the same night costs less and the morning drive to the jeep stands is short. Shogran, covered in our Shogran guide, is the calmer-priced alternative base entirely.
The jeep math
The must-do costs are per vehicle, so the group is the discount: Saif-ul-Malook return runs PKR 5,000 to 9,000 per jeep, Siri Paye from Shogran PKR 6,000 to 10,000, and lake boating PKR 1,500 to 3,000. A full jeep of four pays a quarter each; a couple pays half each; the solo traveller shares at the stand or pays the whole tag. Agree prices before boarding, always.
Food and the rest
PKR 1,200 to 2,500 per person per day eats well: valley dal-and-karahi lunches, the trout dinner splurge that is genuinely worth its PKR 2,500 to 4,000, and endless chai. Add small change for parking and the Babusar fuel top-up if you continue over the top.
Sample 3-day budget, mid-range, per person in a group of four
Shared car from Islamabad: PKR 8,000 to 12,000. Two hotel nights sharing: PKR 8,000 to 14,000. Food: PKR 4,000 to 6,000. Saif-ul-Malook jeep, boat and extras split four ways: PKR 4,000 to 6,000. Total: roughly PKR 24,000 to 38,000 per person, midweek in June or September, and half again on a peak-August weekend for the identical trip.
