The Kaghan valley is one of Pakistan's most loved summer escapes, and it packs a lot into a short trip: green meadows, a famous alpine lake and a high mountain pass, all within a few days of Islamabad. Here is a day-by-day Naran and Kaghan itinerary for three to four days. For the full background, read our Naran and Kaghan guide.
Before you go: getting there and when
Drive from Islamabad via Mansehra and Balakot to Naran, roughly six to eight hours. This is firmly a summer trip, roughly May to September, since the road over Babusar closes with the snow. Babusar Pass usually opens around mid June.
Day 1: Islamabad to Shogran and Siri Paye
Break the drive at Shogran, then take a jeep up to the Siri Paye meadows for wide green pastures and peak views, a gentle, beautiful start. Continue to Naran for the night, or stay in Shogran. See our Shogran and Siri Paye guide.
Day 2: Naran and Lake Saif ul Malook
From Naran, take a jeep or walk the roughly nine kilometres up to Lake Saif ul Malook at 3,224 m, the valley's crown jewel, ringed by peaks and wrapped in legend. Go early to beat the crowds and the afternoon cloud. Back in Naran, enjoy trout by the river.
Day 3: Lulusar Lake and Babusar Pass
Take a day trip north to the beautiful Lulusar Lake and up to Babusar Pass at 4,173 m, the gateway toward the Karakoram Highway and Gilgit-Baltistan, with sweeping views from the top. See our Babusar Top guide. This completes a full three-day trip.
Day 4: Ansoo Lake or a slow finish
For the fit and well-acclimatised, the Ansoo Lake trek is a demanding but stunning day. Otherwise, use the extra day to slow down, revisit Saif ul Malook in better light, or start the drive home unhurried.
Costs and tips
- Budget. See our cost of a Naran and Kaghan trip guide for figures.
- Summer only. The upper valley and Babusar close in winter, so plan for May to September.
- Jeeps. Siri Paye, Saif ul Malook and the upper roads need a jeep, hired locally.
- Altitude. Take Babusar and Ansoo slowly, and carry warm layers even in summer.
